High Rate of Fatal Accidents in Los Angeles County
With the high volume of traffic in Los Angeles, it is no surprise that there is also a high rate of accidents to match. However, it may be astonishing to know that a large percentage of fatalities in these accidents involve pedestrians.
When thinking of motor vehicle accidents, you might first think of accidents that involve two or more motor vehicles. However, it is important to note that accidents also occur in highly populated areas with large numbers of pedestrians and bicyclists as well.
More and more people are reducing their use of motor vehicles when going into Los Angeles and opting to travel by foot. Currently, about 20 percent of L.A. trips are completed by walking or riding a bike. While this may help reduce some congestion on intercity roadways, it also increases the risk of serious injury or death as a result of an accident.
According to statistics, pedestrians in Los Angeles accounted for about one-third of all traffic fatalities. This is well above the national average for such traffic related fatalities, which is under 12 percent of traffic fatalities. These numbers may increase before they get better as more people take to the streets on foot in an effort to help the environment and to reduce vehicle emissions and avoid high gas prices.
